More than 40 dogs were entered in the Surf City Surf Dog competition which was held over the last weekend of September. Even child’s wetsuits wouldn’t have fitted the participants of the annual event which was held at Huntington Beach in California.
The sizes of the dogs varied from small breeds weighing less than 20lbs to much larger canines weighing in at more than 60lbs – four categories in total.
Although the furry animals aren’t renowned for their surfing skills, many succeeded in staying upright on their surfboards, and one dog even set a new world record for the longest surf by a dog, reaching nearly 200ft.
The participating dogs competed against each other and also attempted to break another world record – the most dogs on a surfboard at once.
Some owners took the opportunity to dress up their pets, accessorising them with bright bandanas and colourful Hawaiian style necklaces.
Mark Bednorz, a participant’s owner, said, “We’ve been doing this for the past two years – my dog loves wakeboarding and generally they all just want to be with their owners. Most of the dogs do seem to love being out there.”
Perhaps a new range of Billabong revolution wetsuits for dogs will have to be designed if these dogs intend to make a regular habit out of the activity – they certainly won’t find any men’s, women’s or child’s wetsuits to fit them!
