Of Men and Mavericks surf film

Scottish actor Gerard Butler has been seen sporting a men’s wetsuit in Los Angeles for the filming of Of Men and Mavericks.

The 41-year-old plays the part of ‘Jay Moriarty’, a real-life surfer who died in 2001 in a free-diving accident, who wants to ride the big wave break called Mavericks in Northern California.

Despite being included in a film, Mavericks does exist about half a mile off shore of the poetically named ‘Half Moon Bay’.

This wave break attracts elite surfers from all around the world. It tests people’s skills to the maximum, reaching a towering height of around 15 metres at times, with strong currents, rocks and shallow reefs as dangerous obstacles to be wary of.

Furthermore, apparently the water is freezing, so winter wetsuits all around!

Learner surfers definitely shouldn’t try to take this wave on – even highly skilled surfers can get hurt by the Mavericks.

One 30-year-old surfer with plenty of experience was sucked into the wave by accident in January this year and suffered a brain injury as a result.

Mavericks is a one of a kind wave set, but if you’re only just cutting your teeth on your surf board, don’t pack your women or mens wetsuit in a bag and rush to California in an attempt to experience this wall of water.

Build your way up on calmer waves first and perhaps experience the thrill of Mavericks by watching Gerard Butler’s film when it comes out.
