How to choose the right bodyboard and bodyboarding wetsuit

Bodyboarding is a very popular sport which is renowned for being much easier to master than surfing. Bodyboarders often jump at the opportunity to put on their bodyboarding wetsuits and hit the waves.

However, people hoping to have a go at bodyboarding are often under the common misconception that any bodyboard will do just fine. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The quality of the bodyboard can have a huge affect on a bodyboarder’s success in the water.

Before entering a shop to buy a bodyboard, some research should be conducted first. To prevent being talked into buying an expensive and unsuitable bodyboard, a budget should be set in advance and the purchaser should have a clear idea of what they want the bodyboard to be capable of.

Weight, height and the buyer’s riding technique should all be considered when looking at bodyboards – a board that is too big will be difficult to control, and if it’s too small the board will be problematic to ride.

To find a board which is the right height, it should come up to just below the waist of the bodyboarder when it is stood up lengthways.

Boards with rockers are generally suited to countries with bigger waves. Flat boards are usually ideal for bodyboarding in UK waters.

Bodyboards with the widest point at about halfway down the length usually work well in UK seas. This style is easier to control when drop kneeling and makes quick, snappy turns when ridden.

Choosing the right wetsuit will also have a big effect on the bodyboarding experience. A good wetsuit should keep a bodyboarder warm enough to be able to stay in the water for a considerable length of time – the better the wetsuit, the warmer a person will stay.

Although cheap wetsuits from a supermarket may seem like an excellent bargain, they are unlikely to have enough neoprene content (the insulative rubber) to provide enough warmth in the water. Softer quality neoprene is a lot less likely to irritate skin and will be much warmer.

A wetsuit from a surfing shop may initially seem like more money, but it is a fantastic investment as it can last for more than five years of holidaying.
