Extreme surfer rides 90 foot wave off the coast of Portugal

No matter how long a surfer examines the specifications of certain wetsuits, such as Billabong Solution wetsuits and Billabong Foil wetsuits, it is unlikely that they will find one that boasts the ability to withstand monstrous waves of up to 90 feet.

However, this little fact didn’t stop Garrett McNamara who succeeded in setting a world record for riding a 90 foot wave in Praia do Norte, Nazare, Portugal, during the ZON North Canyon Project.

The 44-year-old from Hawaii was surfing with two fellow sportsmen when he seized the opportunity. The Portugese coastline reportedly contains a deep water canyon which funnels large swells from the Atlantic Ocean, and, under the right conditions, can create gigantic waves – such as the one McNamara tackled.

The record-breaking surfer told Surfer Today, “I feel so blessed and honoured to have been invited to explore this canyon and its special town. The waves here are such a mystery.”

Most surfers who own wetsuits, such as Billabong Solution wetsuits, are unlikely to ever face waves that reach 90 feet in size, but if they do find such a wave we suggest they should approach with caution!
